Biography

Born in Hammond, Indiana, January 19, 1965. At the age of 13, Doug vacationed at Disney World and saw lamp-workers making dolphins, clowns, dogs and other items, he was so amazed with the lamp-worker that his mother could not persuade him to see the other attractions in the park. He begged his mother for a torch so that he could make things out of glass, but she refused for fear of him burning down the house! Years passed, but deep down inside he knew that his true passion was to be a lamp-worker.

At the age of 26, while living in Albuquerque, NM, he rediscovered his interest for glass after seeing Lewis Wilson, a lamp-worker who had a studio in Old Town. Doug then bought a torch, some tools and began taking lessons and practicing in his garage.

Doug uses torches, borosilicate glass rod and tubing to create his work. He enjoys the technical challenge of combining both blown pieces and sculptural elements in his work. He is known for creating incredible colors with borosilicate glass.

Doug is now residing in Valparaiso, IN where he is continuing to create glass goblets, compotes, sculptures and beads. He is currently filming and producing instructional videos in order to share some of his knowledge with the glass community.

"I believe all people are born with specific talents; and it is our mission and God's wish that we seek out these talents and use them to make the world a better place. I feel blessed to have found one of mine and hope to use it to bring glory to God and joy into the world."

"I am inspired by the great Venetian masters who created works in glass that boggle the mind. I try and create work that is both technical in construction and has true aesthetic value. My current fascinations are goblets, decorative vessels and natives."
